![]() Higher Ground Farm is the home to Sahalie Suri Alpacas breeding program. "Sahalie" is a Native American word for "a high place". Our alpaca affair began in 1999 when we purchased the farm with the old red barn and began looking for something to fill the pastures. Tom is a special education teacher by background and now manages a high school full of teenagers as the assistant principal and atheletic director. He spends his day solving one teenage crisis after another. Denise is a therapist specializing Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. At the end of our stressful weekdays we really wanted to come home to something peaceful and relaxing. Alpacas looked like the perfect fit. After a year of research we bought our small starter herd and began the real adventure. We love alpacas in every color and style, from crimp to pencils and white to black, but we have found that we love the suris the most. It is hard for us to not be passionate about this rare and mysterious camelid. Our breeding goals are simple: use every bit of information and training we can get to produce healthy, vigorous suri alpacas who exhibit AND pass on to offspring the strongest suri alpaca characteristics.
Our alpacas roam on 15 acres of hills and valleys and hang out in their "designer" barn during hot summer days and frigid winter nights - they are happy and healthy alpacas who eat better than we do! Our crowning acheivement in life has been raising the 4 most amazing daughters who are all making the world a better place. The two oldest are nurses now, the two youngest still deep into their college educations. Our alpacas have been a vibrant thread in the fabric of their beautiful lives.
